A Level Years

A Level (or Advanced Level) phase is composed of Years 12 and 13 (typically students aged 17 and 18 years). Students undertaking A level examinations study and sit the General Certificate of Education (GCE) external exams.  A Level courses can be completed at two levels, Advanced Subsidiary level (AS) and Advanced Level (A Level).  In the first year of a course students complete the AS components (exam/s and any required course work) to gain their AS level standard. (AS level examinations may be taken at this stage if a student does not intend to continue through to A level.)The student then builds upon the AS level with a second year at the A2 level.  Once the A2 components of the course have been completed the student is awarded an overall A Level grade for that course.

A helpful snapshot of AS and A Levels is available to view by visiting the following webpage:

In Year 12, students will select from the subject lines four subjects/courses at  AS level.  It is usual for students to continue with only three of their chosen four subjects in Standard 13 in order to complete the full A level course in these subjects.  Some students may elect to pick up another subject at AS level in Standard 13, thereby finishing their studies with three A Level subject grades and two AS level qualifications.

It is expected at this stage that when PROMISE students reach the point of selecting their courses for Advanced Level study, they would make their subject choice from the following list, as these subjects are advanced level courses emerging from earlier lines of study at IGCSE level.
